William Henry Gates III, born October 28, 1955 in Seattle Washington. He is the middle son of William H. Gates II – a Seattle lawyer – and Mary Gates – a former teacher who had children before becoming a mother. Bill was the middle child of William H. Bill’s parents enrolled him in Lakeside Preparatory School after he turned 13, hoping to give him a greater challenge. Bill Allen first met Paul Allen while attending Lakeside Preparatory School. Entrepreneurial History- In the year 1975, Gates quit Harvard to co-found a company called Microsoft. With Paul Allen. Gates had a successful company, but in 1980 he struck a deal with IBM which would revolutionize computing. Microsoft made a deal with IBM to install the MS-DOS Operating System on their new PC. Gates sold IBM his software in exchange for $50,000. But he still held the rights to it. Microsoft sold MS-DOS, when the PC market exploded, to other manufacturers of PCs. Microsoft soon became the default operating system for a majority of computers in the world. Microsoft Windows was released. Microsoft created Windows as a response to Apple, which had introduced a similar system in 1984. Microsoft Windows’ first version was criticized by many as inferior to Apple’s. Gates continued, however to push the open-PC concept. Microsoft Windows was compatible with a wide range of PCs, while Apple’s operating system could only be used on Apple computers. Microsoft won this battle and installed its operating system on more than 90% of computers worldwide.

Bill Gates was successful because of his hard work combined with intelligence, timing and business sense. Gates always challenged his staff to innovate and work hard. But he did the same or even more than they did. Gates didn’t fear taking risks. He took a huge risk by leaving Harvard and starting his own business. He also took on a risk by switching Microsoft’s MS-DOS system to Windows. Nevertheless, he calculated the risks. He was confident in his own abilities and product. Gates and Melinda French were married in January 1994. The couple has three children. Two daughters and a boy. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was founded by Gates and Melinda Gates in 2000.
