NTSB’s expertise in investigating accidents is so great that an outside agency calls NTSB when they need help. NTSB investigates not only any accident, but also those that are relevant to aviation safety. They can be used in reports to teach future engineers. NTSB cannot investigate every aircraft accident due to its limited manpower. As a result, accidents are categorized into four different categories ranging from terrorism to major investigations. As for the limited investigation, it is usually for light aircraft crashes that NTSB reviews. NTSB has a code that they use to send a “Go Team”, a team of investigators, to the crash scene to assist with the investigation. After the investigation has been completed, the officers responsible for the investigation have to submit their report to NTSB. NTSB will then review it and create a finalized document that can be shared to the public as well as companies or aviation schools. NTSB can also provide safety recommendations to help prevent future accidents. The Federal Aviation Agency, aircraft manufacturers and airlines are all involved in implementing the safety recommendations. (Houston, 2017)
National Transportation Safety Board Party Process
NTSB gives permission to accident investigations for other companies and organizations that have experts in the field of engineering or officers who specialize in the investigation. These are those who can provide a lot of help and show specialized and technical skills. (The investigative process, n.d.).
No one from the aviation industry, including the airline, aircraft manufacturer or state, can enter the investigation without permission. It is not possible for any of them to enter the NTSB’s investigation without being invited. (Dombroff, 2014)
After the investigation is complete, the NTSB will ask each officer and engineer to submit a report explaining why it was prepared.
